Introduction¶
Very material digital services?¶
When we talk about the environmental impacts of digital technologies, it is easier to imagine the impact of digital equipment: telephones, computers, but also networks, data centres, etc.
But what about digital services - our applications, email software, streaming interfaces? Thanks to these services, which are accessible 24 hours a day, fast, ultra sophisticated and super ergonomic, we can spend up to 10 hours a day in front of a screen.
The digital service refers to all the human, software and hardware resources needed to provide a service. But how does it work? What is the impact? How can the environmental footprint of a digital service be measured using a Life Cycle Assessment?
Finally, reducing the environmental impact of our digital uses is everyone's business, designers, developers and users. Questioning our uses, questioning them and adopting new practices is a necessity.
